3-Day Itinerary
Day 1 | Sunday: Arrival and Welcome
Afternoon:
- Join us for a relaxing afternoon in Madison’s small town neighbor, Paoli, where we’ll visit women-owned businesses, hang out by the river, and enjoy treats from the woman-owned bar and dairy. Trek out to Paoli between noon-1. The farmers market is held from 9-1 and will be wrapping up upon our arrival. Head to The Lazy Squirrel, a woman-owned cocktail lounge in The Mill, to meet up and grab a snack (we’ll provide a light spread) and a drink (NA or not!). We’ll meet with the owner, Lori McGowan, who has overseen the expansion of Paoli and its offerings. Plan to hang out, explore, and enjoy the music for the afternoon until check in time at the hotel. Feel free to bring a game or other activity to share!
Evening:
- Enjoy a delightful meal at Ahan while chatting with your cohort and getting to know new She Shines members, too. Chef and co-owner Jamie Brown-Soukaseume was honored as a James Beard emerging chef for 2023.
Day 2 | Monday: Exploration and Growth
Morning:
- Breakfast from Marigold Kitchen at the Goodman Community Center
- Resource Roundtable Workshop where you can lean on and learn from fellow She Shines members and local Madison subject-matter experts to discuss current issues facing your business. So far, we’ve confirmed Sabrina Madison (entrepreneur, Madison Alderwoman, and founder of The Progress Center for Black Women), Sarah Best (owner of digital marketing firm Sarah Best Strategy), Julie Spitzack (business banker with Summit Credit Union), Michelle Somes-Booher (director of Wisconsin SBDC at the UW-Madison Wisconsin School of Business), Aida Leflore (owner of Leflore Accounting Services), Lupita Montoto (Co-Founder of La Movida Radio), and Barb Schlaefer (owner of employee benefits company JC Rose Associates), plus more to come.
Afternoon:
- Explore local dining options for lunch on your own. We’ll give you a list of options near the hotel and next meeting spot, the Wisconsin State Capitol. We’ll also connect attendees interested in getting lunch together.
- Head to the Wisconsin State Capitol to meet with Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Dallet.
- Spend your afternoon as you like. Pick from two optional activities with varying additional fees: (a) guided nature tour of the Arboretum ($10) or (b) private yoga class taught by Keena Atkinson, owner of R’oujie Wellness ($30). To reserve your spot, add the optional activity ticket to your cart in addition to your retreat fee. If you’d rather stay back and work on work, feel free to do so.
Evening:
- We’ll head out for a private dinner at Tricky Foods where we can catch up on our afternoon excursions and enjoy each other’s company over charcuterie. Owner Therese (aka Tricky) will be there demonstrating her charcuterie know-how while we enjoy a table full of salads, make-your-own sandwiches, and charcuterie favs.
Day 3 | Tuesday: Reflection and Closure
Morning:
- Revel in a delicious brunch hosted by Christy McKenzie at her amazing community space, restaurant, and commercial kitchen, Pasture & Plenty. We’re inviting Madison leaders and business owners to join us for brunch, too! So far, we’ll be joined by: Wisconsin State Representative Francesca Hong, Lacy Rude (owner of Rude Brew Kombucha and Lacy’s Cafe), Carmell Jackson (owner of Melly Mell’s Soul Food), and Shelby Olstad (owner of Miggy’s Bakes and Events by Miggy’s).
Early Afternoon:
